๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Gainesville pickup days change Oct. 5

The Gist: About 65% of Gainesville households will have a new curbside pickup day starting Monday, Oct. 5. Under the city's new GFL contract, collection expands from three weekdays to five; garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk items will share one assigned day for each address.

Why It Matters: Many households will need to move their bins to a different weekday and have them at the curb by 7 a.m.

What's Next: Enter your address in the city's Garbage Day Lookup Map or call 352-334-2330.

๐Ÿ’ก GRU lowers electric and gas fuel charges

The Gist: Gainesville Regional Utilities lowered its electric fuel adjustment from 50 to 45 mills and its purchased gas adjustment from 35 to 32 cents per therm on Sept. 29. A household using 1,000 kilowatt-hours will pay $146.60 instead of $151.60; one using 25 therms of gas will pay $34.99 instead of $35.74.

Why It Matters: Those changes save the example households $5 on electricity and 75 cents on gas each month. GRU says electric base rates will stay flat for a third straight fiscal year.

๐Ÿšฐ Archer finishes $6.58 million wastewater main

๐Ÿšฐ Archer finishes $6.58 million wastewater main

The Gist: Archer completed the first $6.58 million phase of its wastewater project with Newberry on time and within budget. Crews installed 42,500 feet of pipe and 44 valves along US 27/41, connecting Archer's system to Newberry's.

Why It Matters: The connection is part of an $80 million regional treatment plan meant to give both cities more wastewater capacity. The new pipe cannot carry flow until the later phases are finished.

What's Next: Phase 2 will add a major lift station in Archer and more pipe beneath railroad tracks and state roads.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Plan board votes against Depot Park zoning change

The Gist: Gainesville's City Plan Board voted 4-3 to recommend denying new land use and zoning for The Cottages at Depot Park. Sixteen people spoke against the changes. The roughly 2-acre property has about 37 units, and one resident said his rent has stayed at $1,100 for three years.

Why It Matters: Board members raised concerns about losing relatively affordable homes near downtown. The owners could still redevelop the property under its current zoning.

What's Next: The City Commission will make the final decision on the proposed land use and zoning changes.
